I ran across this blog a few days ago on InfoWorld, and it really struck me. One response to the blog was this:
“Another tip: stop being religous about technology. You like Notes, and Netware. Yay. Don't let your religious conviction for a tool impede your career. Apply the skills you obviously have to a new environment.”
We all love NetWare, and we know it is the best NOS ever created - but that is not going to stop Novell from killing it. Only enough customer demand will do that. The blogger points out - quite correctly - that you can’t let blind loyalty towards one specific type of technology stop you from career advancement, even if that means a shift from Novell NetWare to Linux, Windows, or even to an entirely different direction, such as Cisco or software programming.
As a consultant, I know there is a lot of NetWare shops still up and running who are quite content with their systems. Upon occasion there is a need for support, but not nearly as much as you’ll find for Windows or Linux.
In the following months, I’ll be testing NetWare on XEN on Linux (yes, I still think it’s a stupid idea, Novell!) and see if my favorite tools still work. Hopefully, screenshots and tutorials will be completed to help demonstrate this. If anyone has something you’d like to see, please let me know, and I’ll see what can be done.
I’m not ready to give up on NetWare, regardless of version. The “new” version on XEN on Linux should be an “interesting” proposition, to say the least.
As an aside, many of you have emailed me, asking about the “MicroNovell” alliance, and I’m still skeptical. Remember when Novell and Netscape project, “Novonyx”? It was poorly designed, poorly executed, and poorly managed. While I’m hoping this will be better, I’m not confident. Microsoft has a history of not playing well with others, and nothing I’ve seen since their announcement has me convinced otherwise.
In any case, it’s another sign that we should all not put our eggs in one technological basket. Keep sticking with NetWare, but make sure you expand your horizons.
