Tools to Help You Migrate From Windows

Novell's Server Consolidation Migration Toolkit 1.2

The Novell Server Consolidation and Migration Toolkit 1.2 combines the Novell Server Consolidation Utility 4.2 and the NetWare Migration Wizard 8.2 under a single launch interface. This interface asks you what type of consolidation or migration project you want to perform and then launches the appropriate utility automatically. (Novell’s Documentation.)

Server Consolidation Utility 4.2 is a file-and print consolidation tool to help you copy data between existing servers, including Novell Open Enterprise Server for NetWare and Linux, and Windows servers, and migrate network printers. The automation provided by the Server Consolidation Utility eliminates the need to choose from various third-party utilities that would help you perform these tasks individually.

NetWare Migration Wizard 8.2 migrates the file system data and eDirectory™ (formerly NDS®) database from an existing NetWare server to a faster, more reliable NetWare server. After the data is copied, the old server is brought down and the new server assumes its identity.

System Requirements:
  • Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later
     
  • 100 MB of available disk space
     
  • Novell Client 4.91 for Windows 2000/XP with the latest Support Pack
     
  • Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8

Important:

If you have compressed files and you are planning to use the Server Consolidation and Migration Toolkit to copy these files to an NSS volume on a server running NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1, you must first apply NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1.1 or later. This support pack fixes an issue with the compression code in the NSS file system that causes compressed files to become corrupted when copied to a NetWare 6.5 SP1 server via the SMS APIs.

Failure to apply this support pack will result in data loss during the migration!

 Novell’s Migration Wizard vs. Consolidation Utility
  • If you want to migrate data from old hardware that is being replaced, use the Migration Wizard Utility. 
    • NetWare Migration Wizard version 8.0 supports migrations from NetWare 5.1, NetWare 6.0, or NetWare 6.5 source servers. Destination servers must be running NetWare 6.0 or 6.5.
      • Note: It has been widely reported that version 8.0 is not one of the better Migration Utilities offered by Novell. It is recommended that you use the latest Consolidation Toolkit at the top of this page. As with all software here, you use at your own risk. It is offered here simply as a matter of convenience.
    • To perform a migration from a NetWare 3 or NetWare 4 source server, or to perform a migration to a NetWare 5 destination server, use the NetWare Migration Wizard version 6.5
    • If you need the NetWare Migration Wizard version 6.5 that comes with NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 6 (dated 12-09-2005), you can get it here
      • Note: v4.91 of the Novell Client must be installed in order to use this utility!
  • If you want to migrate data from Microsoft Windows NT domains to NetWare, or consolidate data from one or more NetWare servers to an existing NetWare server or Novell Nterprise Branch Office Appliance, use the Novell Server Consolidation Utility 2.6. It also helps you consolidate data and reorganize your network by moving data from any number of NetWare volumes (or directories within volumes) to another NetWare 5.1, 6.0, or 6.5 server; to a NetWare Cluster/SAN; or to multiple NetWare 6.0 or 6.5 servers. This means you have fewer servers to manage.
